Sparring Tournament was a Success!

On Saturday November 16, 2013, the Asian Arts Center hosted a sparring tournament for the students with in our school.  The idea of the tournament was for the students to put to use some of their sparring skills, demonstrate their forms, and understand the process of  Takewondo tournaments. The kids were broken up by age and belt rank resulting in two groups. From there the students began demonstrating their forms for the judges. Awards were given for the strongest forms in each group, and Mr. Matt gave insight as to what would happen in a real tournament in the form demonstration process.  The second portion was sparring, and each sparring pair went  for at least  two rounds. Everyone received a trophy, but the strongest participants received a first place trophies.  The day was an over all success and gave the students a little taste of the competitions that are out there.  The students who were there have already been asking for another tournament, and we plan to do one in February!  Strengthening body and mind, teaching practical self defense, and building character is our mission at the Asian Arts Center and we believe events like this help us continue to carry out our mission to the fullest

Congratulations to Our New Instructors

Congratulations to our new orange belt instructors Jackie Tando- Steele and Molly Nagle. These girls have been assisting with classes at our Centerville location this fall. Jackie and Molly were hired on to the Asian Arts Center staff after a series of personality tests and specific qualifications to find the best possible instructors for our school. Both Jackie and Molly were a match in meeting those qualifications , and they have been learning how to instruct with our unique teaching style as well as training in Taekwondo. They have come a long way in just a few short months and are on the path to becoming great teachers as well as strong martial artists. As these girls continue to train,  they are part of the Asian Arts Center’s mission to  find the best people to teach in our unique system. They remind us that we use our unique teaching style of teaching Taekwondo as a tool to help transform lives in more ways then just kicks and punches. With a mission of strengthening body and mind, teaching practical self defense, and building character; the Asian Arts Center is proud to have these girls as members of our teaching staff to help us continue to achieve the goals we have set with our mission here at the Asian Arts Center.

Building Character

Stronger athletes, better focus, and increased confidence are just a few  goals that are a part of  our overall mission to strengthen body and mind, teach practical self-defense, and build character. When teaching Taekwondo at the Asian Arts Center, we not only want the students to become better athletes, but we want them to become well rounded people too.  Our goal is to help students develop character traits  through the use of actionable definition.  Words like integrity and respect are ones that we use to describe someone’s character. In order for the students to develop these character traits, there must be meaning behind the words we teach. For example when we say to the student , “good eye contact”, or “he/she answered back yes sir/ma’am, now I feel respected.” We then instruct the students to go home and show that same respect to their parents. The students can now make the connection between the actions of eye contact and answering back as ways to show respect. We do not have to go into a detailed explanation of the word but rather define the word with actions they understand. Giving actions to these words helps to better our students’ character and  is just another reason why we see such a positive change in our students here at the Asian Arts Center.

The History of Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a form of martial arts that has been passed down for thousands of years from the Ancient Koreans and has become one of the most popular forms of martial arts. With its rich history and world wide participation, it was introduced in to the Olympic games in 1984.   According to the World Federation of Taekwondo,   “is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spiritual life through training our body and mind.”  The Asian Arts Center, like the Ancient Koreans, uses martial arts to teach more than just kicking and punching,  but rather strengthen body and mind. Our mission statement at the Asian Arts Center is to strengthen body and mind, teach practical self defense, and build character all in which maintain the idea that Taekwondo a lifestyle. At the Asian Arts Center we use martial arts as a teaching tool to improve focus, disciple, and promote behavior change among our students. Demonstrating Self Defense!

October is Child Safety Month, and with that the Asian Arts Center was asked to demonstrate some self-defense techniques at the Hope United Methodist Church’s Trunk or Treat this past Sunday. While showing the practical defense moves, the demo team looked strong representing the Asian Arts Center with effective forms of self-defense. Not only did the demo team show the Trunk or Treaters the self-defense techniques, but they were able show off some of their own Taegeuk forms, Hyper Pro forms, and some impressive kicks as well. We were able to pass along the Asian Arts Center’s mission of strengthening body and mind, teaching practical self defense, and building character. The students from the Asian Arts Center who were part of our demonstration team truly embodied our mission and gave some practical self-defense tips to help keep kids safe. A big thank you to all of our demo volunteers who helped make this event a success!IMG_0975

The Importance of Structure

Our program at the Asian Arts Center has a three part mission, first to strengthen body and mind, second to teach practical self-defense, and finally to build character and inspire a purpose driven life. How do we accomplish that here at the Asian Arts Center? The answer is in our teaching system which has a couple of key pieces that are there to ensure that the students get the most out of the classes. One of the key pieces is the structure, which is maintained in every class through a checklist. As the instructors make certain that the series of physical activities are complete in the specific order, the design that is in place gets the results that are outlined in our mission. Alternating between a fast and slow pace, deep breathing, and constant practice of the techniques that are introduced in each class, are all part of the design. The structure and order in which they are completed are what produces the most effective results. At the Asian Arts Center we see the physical, mental, and behavioral change that happen here on a daily basis which are all results of our teaching style and class structure.

Our Powerful Teaching Style

The teaching style at the Asian Arts Center is unique in many of its techniques, and the way in which we teach drives results in every aspect of a student’s life. That being said, one of our most effective method is the physical components of our classes which alternate between fast-paced physical activity to slowing down the body with deep breathing. The breathing strengthens both the body and mind through the physical, mental, and emotional control that is reinforced by taking the deep breaths. After bursts of intense physical activities, the deep breaths slow down the body, and with practice this becomes the student’s condition response to stress. This becomes a tool they can use in their every day lives. Not only do we teach them how to practice the deep breathing but practical uses such as feeling overwhelmed in school or feeling the need to lash out at home, and the importance of deep breathing in these situations. The breathing becomes the conditioned response and just one of the many ways that our teaching method strengthens both body and mind.
