The History of Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a form of martial arts that has been passed down for thousands of years from the Ancient Koreans and has become one of the most popular forms of martial arts. With its rich history and world wide participation, it was introduced in to the Olympic games in 1984.   According to the World Federation of Taekwondo,   “is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spiritual life through training our body and mind.”  The Asian Arts Center, like the Ancient Koreans, uses martial arts to teach more than just kicking and punching,  but rather strengthen body and mind. Our mission statement at the Asian Arts Center is to strengthen body and mind, teach practical self defense, and build character all in which maintain the idea that Taekwondo a lifestyle. At the Asian Arts Center we use martial arts as a teaching tool to improve focus, disciple, and promote behavior change among our students. Demonstrating Self Defense!

October is Child Safety Month, and with that the Asian Arts Center was asked to demonstrate some self-defense techniques at the Hope United Methodist Church’s Trunk or Treat this past Sunday. While showing the practical defense moves, the demo team looked strong representing the Asian Arts Center with effective forms of self-defense. Not only did the demo team show the Trunk or Treaters the self-defense techniques, but they were able show off some of their own Taegeuk forms, Hyper Pro forms, and some impressive kicks as well. We were able to pass along the Asian Arts Center’s mission of strengthening body and mind, teaching practical self defense, and building character. The students from the Asian Arts Center who were part of our demonstration team truly embodied our mission and gave some practical self-defense tips to help keep kids safe. The Importance of Structure

Our program at the Asian Arts Center has a three part mission, first to strengthen body and mind, second to teach practical self-defense, and finally to build character and inspire a purpose driven life. How do we accomplish that here at the Asian Arts Center? The answer is in our teaching system which has a couple of key pieces that are there to ensure that the students get the most out of the classes. One of the key pieces is the structure, which is maintained in every class through a checklist. As the instructors make certain that the series of physical activities are complete in the specific order, the design that is in place gets the results that are outlined in our mission. Alternating between a fast and slow pace, deep breathing, and constant practice of the techniques that are introduced in each class, are all part of the design. The structure and order in which they are completed are what produces the most effective results. At the Asian Arts Center we see the physical, mental,and behavioral change that happen here on a daily basis which are all results of our teaching style and class structure.


Our Powerful Teaching Style

The teaching style at the Asian Arts Center is unique in many of its techniques, and the way in which we teach drives results in every aspect of a student’s life. That being said, one of our most effective method is the physical components of our classes which alternate between fast-paced physical activity to slowing down the body with deep breathing. The breathing strengthens both the body and mind through the physical, mental, and emotional control that is reinforced by taking the deep breaths. After bursts of intense physical activities, the deep breaths slow down the body, and with practice this becomes the student’s condition response to stress. This becomes a tool they can use in their every day lives. Not only do we teach them how to practice the deep breathing but practical uses such as feeling overwhelmed in school or feeling the need to lash out at home, and the importance of deep breathing in these situations. The breathing becomes the conditioned response and just one of the many ways that our teaching method strengthens both body and mind.

Work Out, Have Fun!

AAC SpringStudents at the Asian Arts Center Taekwondo School are having fun working out, and at the same time, they are learning self-defense. Statistics show that one out of three kids will be bullied or be the victim of an attack. Each week, your child will learn new self-defense skills in class, and this increases their confidence. There is no better confidence builder than knowing you can defend yourself.

In class, no one sits on the bench! Everyone works out together. Research shows that people are 20% more successful when working with others. Children are even more influenced by their peers.
